PixelLinkr #215: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Forza Horizon 5 can rewind your car in an online race without rewinding the other drivers. They keep going while you correct your mistake. You have edited the accident out of your personal history and become even later to the finish line. A beautifully petty compromise.

🟢 Easy: Kart racers with weapons and power-ups

Games: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe · Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled · Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway · Disney Speedstorm

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe reached Switch in 2017 as a rerelease of the Wii U game, bringing its existing downloadable content and a revamped battle mode. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled revisits Crash's earlier racer as a 2019 remaster. Their familiar characters make this an approachable first row, but the items that affect the competition are the actual link.

Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3 and Disney Speedstorm bring their own licensed casts to that kind of race. Speed alone doesn't settle the result when offensive items and power-ups can intervene. I enjoy the gap between how friendly these rosters look and how quickly a race becomes a collection of personal allegations.

🟡 Medium: Seek revenge for murdered family

Games: Sifu · Afro Samurai · Watch Dogs · Shenmue

Sifu follows the child of a murdered martial-arts master. Afro sees his father killed by Justice and pursues revenge as an adult. In Shenmue, Ryo Hazuki sets out after his father's murder in Yokosuka. The fighting styles and pacing differ, but the deaths give the protagonists their direction.

Watch Dogs broadens the family relationship: Aiden Pearce seeks revenge after his niece is killed in a botched assassination attempt. That is why the label says family, not fathers. A hacker in a fictionalised Chicago can belong with these martial artists through motive, even when the game gives him a very different set of tools.

🔵 Hard: Rewind driving mistakes during a race

Games: Forza Horizon 5 · GRID · DiRT 3 · F1 2020

The racing assist gives you a chance to roll back recent driving and try a section again without restarting the event. GRID and F1 call it flashback; DiRT 3 explicitly offers the ability to turn back time after a mistake. It is one of my favourite racing features because the wall has already explained what went wrong. I don't need another lecture from the entire starting grid.

The settings and modes matter. A feature being available doesn't mean you must use it, and it doesn't promise the same behaviour in every race type. The Forza online qualification from the opener is particularly useful: your correction does not drag everyone else's car back through time.

This is the second racing row, but a different question. The kart group centres on offensive items affecting opponents. These games let you correct your own driving. Sorting them as cartoon racers and realistic racers gets you close; remembering the rollback mechanic finishes the connection.

🟣 Tricky: Titles contain words meaning without end

Games: Halo Infinite · Doom Eternal · Infinite Undiscovery · Endless Space 2

Infinite, Eternal and Endless point toward the same idea. Read those exact title words and you can connect a pair of shooters, an action RPG and a space-strategy game without requiring a shared setting or developer.

Endless Space 2 entered early access in 2016 and reached its full release in May 2017. That gives its title a nice contrast: something called Endless still had a specific launch day and a development phase that ended.

The words promise a scope, not a literal statement that you cannot finish the games. That is the click worth keeping: the title language is the evidence. You don't need to prove that an RPG campaign lasts forever, although trying to schedule one can certainly make it feel that way.

The Forza online rewind remains the cruelest detail here. Even time travel can't guarantee you'll catch the person ahead of you.

CineLinkr's November 1 puzzle has Ben Stiller's awkward situations and a pregnancy experiment in Junior, where a simple undo button would be an entirely different film.
