Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
Demonologist has an Abandoned House exorcism that includes finding five fingers and burning them in the basement. Other maps have different tasks. The common thread is that correctly identifying a ghost only gets you halfway through the shift. This is an exceptionally strange Halloween checklist to hand a new employee.
Games: Bayonetta · WitchSpring R · Cotton Reboot! · Wytchwood
Bayonetta brings firearms, magic and demon-summoning to her action game. Pieberry in WitchSpring R starts with a rather smaller ambition: finding strawberry pie while learning about the world beyond her forest. Both are witch protagonists. Their expectations for a productive afternoon could hardly be further apart.
Cotton Reboot! puts its witch on a broom in a shoot-'em-up adventure. Wytchwood makes you the old witch of the woods, gathering ingredients and brewing enchantments. That spread is why the role matters more than the combat style: you can shoot, train or craft your way through the game and still belong here. The two titles that practically spell out witchcraft also help point toward the less literal pair.
Games: I'm on Observation Duty 2 · I'm on Observation Duty 4 · Five Nights at Freddy's 3 · Ultimate Custom Night
The Observation Duty games make you remember rooms, inspect live camera footage and report changes. Furniture can move, extra objects can appear, and intruders can arrive. The frightening part includes having to decide whether you actually remember where that chair was. Your memory has become a member of staff and it is already late.
Five Nights at Freddy's 3 makes camera monitoring part of surviving Springtrap while systems can fail. Ultimate Custom Night also uses its cameras to monitor the building and manage threats from its animatronics, including watching Funtime Foxy. Spotting the problem is a playable task in all four, even though reporting an anomaly and defending an office require different responses.
Games: Dead Space · Deadlight · Dead Nation · Deadbolt
Two titles give you Dead as a separate word. The other two attach it to light and bolt. That compound-word allowance is the whole trick: the spelling at the start stays the same even when the spaces disappear.
The games then wander off into different forms. The original Dead Space on this board is the 2008 survival-horror game, not the later remake. Deadlight is a side-scrolling cinematic platformer; Dead Nation takes its shooting in another direction; Deadbolt mixes stealth and action. Knowing those distinctions can distract you from the opening letters.
Deadlight also has a release-credit distinction worth keeping straight. Microsoft Studios published the 2012 original. Deep Silver published the later Director's Cut. That later name doesn't make the original edition a different game, and none of those publisher details is needed for the title answer.
Games: Devour · Pacify · Demonologist · Forewarned
Devour gives its teams ritual objects to find and forbidden rituals to complete in order to break Azazel's hold on possessed cultists. It turns banishment into a cooperative job, with the demon doing everything possible to make the job unpleasant.
Pacify distinguishes normal dolls, which temporarily calm the girl, from marked dolls that you burn in the basement boiler. The guide's completion sequence calls for burning nine marked dolls. Demonologist uses map-specific exorcisms; the finger-burning task in the Abandoned House is one concrete example. These are player actions with a neutralisation goal, beyond simply investigating a spooky building.
Forewarned lets archaeologists identify the Medjai in Egyptian tombs and perform hidden rituals to banish them. The board uses its 2024 full-release identity; guides sometimes refer to its 2021 early-access start. Once you notice the prescribed ritual steps, four different haunted workplaces fit together. Learning the enemy's identity is useful. Finishing its departure arrangements is better.
I enjoy the idea that the ritual group can close its cases while the camera group is still wondering whether a room has gained a suspicious lamp.
CineLinkr's Halloween puzzle makes recorded images dangerous themselves, with The Ring, Sinister and two other excellent reasons to reconsider movie night.
