PixelLinkr #207: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Deadly Premonition saves your progress at telephones. Francis York Morgan already has plenty to discuss with someone the rest of the cast cannot see. A phone that records the entire investigation feels almost restrained.

🟢 Easy: Fight fires and rescue trapped civilians

Games: The Firemen · The Ignition Factor · Rosco McQueen: Firefighter Extreme · Rescue 2: Everyday Heroes

The two SNES games make burning buildings into action spaces. Your job is to stop the fire and find people who cannot get out by themselves. A room that was safe a moment ago can become the next problem.

Rosco McQueen takes the firefighter into a 3D adventure; Rescue 2 puts more emphasis on directing emergency personnel. The perspective changes, but the objective stays physical and urgent. Defeating the building would be a poor substitute for getting everyone out of it.

🟡 Medium: In-world objects provide manual save points

Games: Resident Evil Zero · Resident Evil 7: Biohazard · Final Fantasy XIII · Deadly Premonition

Resident Evil Zero has typewriters and ink ribbons. Resident Evil 7 exchanges those for cassette recorders, while Final Fantasy XIII places save stations along its route. Deadly Premonition's phones belong to a far stranger ordinary world.

These objects make saving a place you visit rather than just a menu command. You recognize the object, approach it, and briefly treat that corner of the game as somewhere dependable. A typewriter can become the most comforting thing in a mansion without anybody typing a useful letter.

🔵 Hard: Sold in bundles with a dedicated accessory

Games: Kinect Adventures! · EyeToy: Play 2 · Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix · Rocksmith 2014

The retail package carries part of the answer. Kinect Adventures accompanied the sensor, EyeToy bundles included the camera, and Mario Mix came with a GameCube dance mat.

Rocksmith 2014 bundles supplied the Real Tone Cable for connecting an electric guitar. Not every edition included the accessory, which is why the label says these games were sold in bundles rather than claiming every copy had the same contents.

The shared trait asks you to think beyond the software. A camera, mat, or cable changes what the player physically does. The box can be part of the game's control scheme, right up until somebody loses the important bit in a drawer.

🟣 Tricky: Auto-attacks mow down escalating hordes

Games: Soulstone Survivors · Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor · Death Must Die · Yet Another Zombie Survivors

These games automate attacks while asking you to survive the consequences of where you stand. Movement and upgrade choices turn a vulnerable character into a machine that can handle a screenful of enemies.

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor recasts its parent series as a solo auto-shooter. Soulstone Survivors reached full release in 2025, after its early-access period. Both make an escalating build part of the run's appeal.

The reveal concerns the split between player and character. Your character supplies much of the firing; you supply positioning and decisions that determine whether the firing is enough. The apparent chaos comes from a build you assembled, which makes its excesses oddly personal.

A save phone is a nice place to end after all those swarms. Today's CineLinkr puzzle gives its own rescue work to hardened loners protecting endangered children.
