PixelLinkr #203: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Far Cry 4 can end while the player waits at dinner. Pagan Min asks Ajay to stay put, disappears for several minutes, then returns and handles the original request. Open-world rebellion canceled due to unusual patience.

🟢 Easy: Playable feline protagonists

Games: Copycat · Cat Quest II · A Street Cat's Tale · Paws: A Shelter 2 Game

Copycat follows Dawn, a shelter cat whose new home becomes less secure when a stray double appears. A Street Cat's Tale makes food and human trust daily survival concerns for a kitten separated from its mother.

Cat Quest II sends a cat king and dog king across a bright action-RPG world. Paws shifts to a lynx cub in the Shelter universe. Feline scale changes everything: furniture becomes geography and a quiet street becomes a resource map.

🟡 Medium: Guide a crowd toward safety or objectives

Games: ChuChu Rocket! · Flockers · Zombie Tsunami · Lemmings 2: The Tribes

ChuChu Rocket! uses arrows to route mice around cats and into rockets. Lemmings 2 assigns skills to a crowd that will otherwise march into danger with impressive workplace consistency.

Flockers replaces lemmings with sheep and adds Team17's fondness for cheerful catastrophe. Zombie Tsunami lets the horde grow as it runs. The individuals differ, but the player's job stays managerial: redirect the crowd before momentum becomes a group decision.

🔵 Hard: Spoken voice commands directly control play

Games: Tom Clancy's EndWar · SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs · Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 · Ecstatica II

SOCOM used a PlayStation 2 headset to let players order squadmates by voice. EndWar built its tactical interface around spoken unit commands, aiming for the feeling of a commander directing a battlefield rather than clicking through nested menus.

Console versions of Rainbow Six 3 also accepted squad orders. Ecstatica II, released in some regions as The Broken Seal, experimented with speech recognition for party commands years earlier.

The shared appeal is immediate authority. The shared danger is learning whether the game misunderstood you before or after the squad enters the room.

🟣 Tricky: Opening choices can trigger an early ending

Games: Far Cry 4 · Far Cry 5 · Shadow Complex · We Happy Few

These games hide exits near the entrance. Far Cry 4 rewards obedience and waiting. Far Cry 5 lets the sheriff refuse the arrest that would start the conflict. We Happy Few can roll credits if Arthur takes his Joy and declines to remember.

Shadow Complex asks for a more active retreat: return to the starting jeep after Claire's capture and Jason can leave. The rescue adventure ends because the player looked at the heroic premise and drove home.

That is the aha. The secret ending does not require mastery. It requires noticing that a game can offer a choice before everyone agrees the game has begun.

The early-ending group is delightfully rude to narrative momentum. Today's CineLinkr puzzle has its own tiny acts of compression, though those live inside apostrophes rather than opening menus.
