PixelLinkr #202: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

My Summer Car gives you a garage, a pile of parts, and enough freedom to install something incorrectly. The car can fail because you built it badly. At last, a driving game that respects the family tradition of one leftover bolt.

🟢 Easy: Build and customize fighting robots

Games: Custom Robo · Medabots: Metabee · Gundam Breaker 3 · Armored Core: For Answer

Custom Robo and Medabots turn part selection into preparation for compact arena fights. Bodies, legs, weapons, and specialized pieces change how the machine moves and attacks. The menu is half workshop, half pre-fight nerves.

Gundam Breaker 3 builds combatants from Gunpla parts, making kitbashing into progression. Armored Core: For Answer treats weight, energy, boosters, and weapons as a graduate course with missiles.

🟡 Medium: Weapons lose durability through use

Games: Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade · S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky · Dark Souls II · The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

Fire Emblem counts down weapon uses with ruthless transparency. Daggerfall tracks equipment condition. Clear Sky adds jams and degradation, turning a trusted rifle into an argument at the least convenient moment.

Dark Souls II repairs most broken equipment at a bonfire, but low durability still changes how players plan a route. The system asks an annoying, useful question: how many more swings does confidence have left?

🔵 Hard: Maintain one vehicle across a dangerous journey

Games: Days Gone · The Long Drive · My Summer Car · Forever Skies

These vehicles are not disposable pickups. Deacon's motorcycle in Days Gone needs fuel, repairs, and upgrades. Forever Skies turns an airship into transport, workshop, and home above a poisoned Earth.

The Long Drive makes roadside improvisation the trip. My Summer Car goes further back and asks you to assemble the vehicle before it can disappoint you. Maintenance is not a menu tax here; it is the story you tell after the wheel leaves.

The group works because attachment grows through labor. A machine becomes yours after you have fueled it, fixed it, cursed it, and found the missing part under poor lighting.

🟣 Tricky: Titles include honorifics

Games: Dr. Mario · Ms. Pac-Man · Professor Layton and the Curious Village · Mr. Nutz

The aha arrives before the names: Dr., Ms., Professor, Mr. Four titles approach with impeccable manners, even when one belongs to a squirrel in sneakers.

Ms. Pac-Man began as a General Computer Corporation enhancement project before Midway adopted it as an official release. Professor Layton and the Curious Village launched Level-5's puzzle-adventure series on Nintendo DS. Dr. Mario prescribed falling capsules without requesting anyone's medical history.

Mr. Nutz completes the set by proving that an honorific does not guarantee seriousness. It only guarantees punctuation and expectations.

I trust the temperamental vehicles more than I trust any weapon with a durability meter. Today's CineLinkr puzzle also studies things under pressure, except its defenders cannot stop for fuel.
