Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
Divekick looked at the fighting-game controller and fired almost everyone. Two buttons remain: dive and kick. Landing either attack wins the round, which is both elegant design and a threat.
Games: Dead to Rights · Bolt · Dog's Life · Tokyo Jungle
Dog's Life commits fully to the assignment. Frontier Developments built an adventure around Jake's nose, bodily functions, and urgent need to rescue another dog. David Braben, later known for Elite Dangerous, worked on this. Careers contain multitudes.
Dead to Rights briefly hands control to Shadow for stealth takedowns, while Bolt gives Disney's television superdog laser vision. Tokyo Jungle is less reassuring. Its playable dogs are simply more mouths trying to survive a ruined Tokyo.
Games: Remember Me · Twin Mirror · The Signifier · In Sound Mind
Remember Me makes memory editing a puzzle. Nilin can alter details inside another person's recollection, then watch the revised version change a decision outside it. It is detective work with the ethical standards removed.
Twin Mirror builds deductions inside a Mind Palace. The Signifier moves between objective recordings and subjective dream spaces. In Sound Mind turns patient tapes into entire psychological worlds, because apparently filing notes was too calm.
Games: Samurai GUNN 2 · Nidhogg 2 · Boomerang Fu · Divekick
The shared rule is brutal clarity. One opening appears, one strike lands, and the immediate contest is over. Nidhogg 2 stretches that idea across a tug-of-war race, so a death loses ground rather than the whole match.
Boomerang Fu puts the same lethality inside a cheerful kitchen drawer. A watermelon can bisect a banana, celebrate, and be dead two seconds later. Samurai GUNN 2 supplies swords and a tiny ammunition count. Divekick removes even the weapon.
This group works because it strips away attrition. Health bars cannot rescue a sloppy choice. The games become readable, tense, and very funny whenever two confident players miss.
Games: S.C.A.R.S. · M.A.X.: Mechanized Assault & Exploration · R.U.S.E. · S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team
The dots are the tell. Once S.C.A.R.S. and R.U.S.E. sit beside each other, the titles stop looking like words and start looking like someone is being paid by the period.
M.A.X. helpfully expands itself as Mechanized Assault & Exploration. S.C.A.T. goes further with Special Cybernetic Attack Team, a name assembled under conditions of severe acronym pressure. R.U.S.E. never settled on a canonical expansion. It simply enjoys the outfit.
That is the aha: ignore genre, decade, and platform. Read the typography. The punctuation has been confessing the whole time.
I keep coming back to Divekick's confidence. Two buttons, one hit, no committee meeting. Today's CineLinkr puzzle also likes blunt numbering, though Rocky III takes considerably longer to settle matters.
