PixelLinkr #197: The Story Behind the Puzzle
Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style grew from the engine of the cancelled fighting game Thrill Kill. The Wu-Tang Clan got characters, music, and a four-player brawler. Most album tie-ins settle for a T-shirt.
🟢 Easy: Licensed games built around recording artists
Games: Michael Jackson's Moonwalker · 50 Cent: Bulletproof · Britney's Dance Beat · Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style
Moonwalker lets Michael Jackson defeat enemies with dance magic. Britney's Dance Beat turns auditions and music videos into rhythm challenges. Both understand that the artist's performance is the product.
50 Cent: Bulletproof builds a shooter around 50 Cent and G-Unit. Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style makes the clan a fighting roster. Celebrity branding has rarely involved this many health bars.
🟡 Medium: A strict in-game clock limits a major objective
Games: Fallout · Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland · Valkyrie Profile · King's Quest III: To Heir Is Human
Fallout originally gives the Vault Dweller 150 days to find a water chip. Atelier Rorona spreads twelve assignments across a fixed three-year schedule. The calendar is not flavor text. It is standing behind you with a clipboard.
Valkyrie Profile divides its path to Ragnarok into finite periods. King's Quest III times the wizard Manannan's trips away from home, turning every stolen moment into escape preparation.
🔵 Hard: Modern survival horror games with fixed-camera modes
Games: Tormented Souls · Alisa · Song of Horror · Them and Us
Alisa was built to resemble late-1990s survival horror, down to tank controls and pre-rendered-looking rooms. Tormented Souls and Song of Horror also make the camera withhold information at exactly the wrong time.
Them and Us offers a fixed-camera mode rather than forcing it. The shared pleasure is deliberate discomfort: enter a room, hear something, and wait for the angle to reveal whether you should run.
🟣 Tricky: Combat takes place inside a living body
Games: Microcosm · Nano Assault · MicroBot · Abadox: The Deadly Inner War
Microcosm used full-motion video for its microscopic trip through a human body. MicroBot sends a tiny machine through veins, bones, lungs, and the brain. Medical consent forms remain conspicuously absent.
Nano Assault fights infection from inside a host. Abadox takes the biggest swing: the planet itself has been swallowed by a giant organism named Parasitis. Once the scale clicks, every corridor becomes anatomy.
MicroBot has the day's least sanitary dungeon. For more responsible animal care, CineLinkr #197 includes Honeyland and a rule that the bees keep half.
