Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
The Thing gives squad members separate fear and trust meters. This means the alien is dangerous, but so is bringing an already nervous man into a dark room and waving a flamethrower around. Management training was limited in 2002.
Games: CarnEvil · Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles · Dead Space: Extraction · The House of the Dead: Overkill
CarnEvil puts a light gun in front of a haunted amusement park and removes any possibility of politely leaving. The House of the Dead: Overkill uses the same fixed-route shooting format with grindhouse grime turned up until the knob comes off.
Umbrella Chronicles repackages Resident Evil history as target practice. Dead Space: Extraction sends players through the Aegis VII disaster before Isaac Clarke arrives. You control the aim. The route has made its own bad choices.
Games: The Thing · Call of Cthulhu · The Sinking City · Clock Tower 3
Call of Cthulhu and The Sinking City make sanity a readable statistic, which is useful if you enjoy watching a number confirm that everything is going badly. Clock Tower 3 uses a Panic Meter that makes Alyssa harder to control under pressure.
The Thing spreads fear across a squad. Allies can freeze, panic, or turn on the group. The monster has competition from the user interface.
Games: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake · Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together · Mount & Blade · Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Dragon Quest III's personality quiz changes the hero's growth tendencies. Tactics Ogre uses tarot questions to adjust Denam's starting statistics, while Mount & Blade turns background answers into skills, equipment, and social position.
Shattered Memories is the unnerving one. Its opening therapy questions start a profile that alters characters and environments. The game asks about you before deciding what version of Silent Hill you deserve.
Games: Tekken 7 · The Binding of Isaac · Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening · Assassin's Creed III
Tekken 7 makes the Mishima family feud playable. The Binding of Isaac turns Mom and Mom's Heart into major bosses, which is one way to make a family argument impossible to ignore.
Devil May Cry 3 repeatedly pits Dante against his twin Vergil. Assassin's Creed III brings Connor and his father Haytham into direct conflict. Relatives alone are not enough for this row. The relationship must become a moveset, an arena, and a health bar.
The family-boss row has the sharpest sting. CineLinkr #196 offers human hunters and Christmas burglars if you prefer conflict without a combo counter.
