PixelLinkr #188: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Superflight removes almost everything between the player and a cliff face. You jump, spread the wingsuit, and immediately learn whether confidence counts as an aerodynamic principle. It does not.

🟢 Easy: Gliding is a major traversal tool

Games: Haven Park · Sky: Children of the Light · Exo One · Superflight

Sky gives flight a social quality. Players recharge their capes, rise together, and turn distant clouds into shared routes. Exo One is stranger: its alien craft rolls downhill, gathers speed, and converts momentum into long glides over vast planets.

Haven Park treats gliding as one tool in a gentle camping trip. Superflight makes it the whole appetite. One wants a pleasant landing near a campsite. The other wants you to miss a rock by half an inch and call that success.

🟡 Medium: Isolated space facilities become dangerous

Games: Spirits of Xanadu · The Persistence · Fort Solis · Red Matter 2

Fort Solis begins with an alarm on a Martian station and a crew that has stopped answering. Spirits of Xanadu sends the player onto a research vessel whose automated systems are much more active than its people.

The Persistence adds mutants and procedural decks to a colony ship disaster. Red Matter 2 carries its Cold War flavored mystery across off-world facilities in VR. All four understand that an empty station is never empty. It is merely saving the introduction.

🔵 Hard: Turn-based tactical series entries

Games: Gears Tactics · Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope · XCOM: Chimera Squad · Hard West 2

Gears Tactics translates waist-high cover and chainsaw rifles into action points. Sparks of Hope loosens the grid and lets Mario's squad move within a range before committing. The plumber has entered tactics, and the Rabbids have somehow completed the paperwork.

Chimera Squad replaces disposable recruits with named agents and breach sequences. Hard West 2 brings trick shots and supernatural trouble to the frontier. In each game, the decisive skill is not speed. It is spending the next move without ruining the three after it.

The group earns its difficulty because the visual styles disagree so loudly. Bright Mushroom Kingdom planets, dusty western towns, alien police work, and Gears armor all hide the same turn-by-turn calculation.

🟣 Tricky: Released for Playdate

Games: Bloom · Saturday Edition · Casual Birder · Crankin's Time Travel Adventure

Playdate is the small yellow handheld with a crank on its side. Crankin's Time Travel Adventure makes that hardware the joke: turning the crank moves time forward or backward while Crankin tries to reach a date.

Saturday Edition and Casual Birder came through the console's first season of delivered games. Bloom mixes a real-time story with flowers and messages. The titles share no obvious genre because the connection belongs to the machine in your hand.

That is the aha: not Nintendo, not mobile, not a yellow-title word trick. Four tiny games live on the same tiny crank-equipped console.

The space-station row has the best collection of doors nobody should open. Today's CineLinkr puzzle offers the terrestrial version, where a new friend at the door may be worse.
