Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
Paprium arrived for the Sega Genesis in 2020, thirty-one years after the console's North American launch. Some games miss a release window. Paprium missed several hardware generations and kept walking.
Games: Rayman Origins · Sonic Superstars · Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair · New Super Mario Bros. Wii
These games render characters and scenery with modern depth while keeping movement mostly on a side-on track. Rayman Origins uses hand-drawn art, while Sonic Superstars puts polygonal characters through classic-style lanes.
Impossible Lair and New Super Mario Bros. Wii use the same compromise: a world with visual depth and platforming that still knows left and right are the important directions.
Games: Paprium · Tanglewood · Xeno Crisis · Pier Solar and the Great Architects
Pier Solar launched on Genesis in 2010, then received versions for newer systems. Tanglewood was developed with original Sega hardware in mind and arrived in 2018.
Xeno Crisis followed in 2019, and Paprium arrived in 2020. This is not retro styling alone. These games became commercial cartridges for hardware old enough to have strong opinions about televisions.
Games: Knytt Underground · Sheepo · Knytt · Knytt Stories
Knytt Underground stretches a spare visual style across a huge connected cave system. Sheepo gathers creature abilities and uses them to open new routes.
Knytt and Knytt Stories lean into quiet movement, large maps, and ability-gated routes. The shared pleasure is learning a place that initially looks almost too simple to hide anything.
Games: The Sojourn · Tandem: A Tale of Shadows · Iris.Fall · Reflection of Mine
The Sojourn shifts between light and dark spaces. Tandem coordinates a top-down character with a side-scrolling shadow, while Iris.Fall moves between a physical world and shadow play.
Reflection of Mine controls two versions of a fractured self across mirrored layouts. The click comes from treating each screen as two linked realities. Progress in one view explains the obstacle in the other.
Today's CineLinkr puzzle also likes constrained spaces, though its locked cars and crowded houses offer far fewer helpful reality switches.
