Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
Terra Nil asks you to repair an ecosystem, recycle the machinery, and leave. The reward for saving the world is cleaning up after yourself, a brutal fantasy premise.
Games: Poltergeist: A Pixelated Horror · Ghost 1.0 · Haunting Starring Polterguy · Rogue Spirit
Ghost 1.0 leaves its robotic shell to inhabit machinery. Rogue Spirit possesses defeated enemies and borrows their abilities. Poltergeist: A Pixelated Horror and Haunting Starring Polterguy apply the idea to household objects.
Possession works as a mechanic because a new body is both a disguise and a toolset. A sofa is less glamorous than an enemy soldier, but it can still terrify a family if the cushions behave with confidence.
Games: Battlefield 1 · Uncharted: The Lost Legacy · Blood · TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
Battlefield 1 turns an armored train into a moving Behemoth. Blood stages its Phantom Express level on a train packed with cultists, and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect sends Cortez through gunfire aboard one.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy closes with a train sequence built around forward motion, changing cover, and increasingly bad footing. The train never pauses for the set piece. That would be considerate, and trains have timetables.
Games: Grey Hack · Hack RUN · NITE Team 4 · Midnight Protocol
Grey Hack simulates a networked computer world with Unix-like commands. Hack RUN strips the fantasy down to a terminal and a trail of accounts. NITE Team 4 borrows real cybersecurity language, while Midnight Protocol runs its tactical hacking through keyboard commands.
The connection sits in the interface. These games make typing the action rather than a decorative hacking animation. Misspelling a command is therefore the cyberwar equivalent of tripping over your own shoelace.
Games: Terra Nil · Planet Crafter · Wildmender · TerraGenesis
Terra Nil rebuilds biomes across ruined land, then asks the player to remove the equipment. Planet Crafter tracks planetary change through heat, oxygen, pressure, water, and life. Wildmender restores a desert ecosystem, while TerraGenesis models planetary conditions on a larger scale.
The aha is the direction of progress. Most building games reward leaving more structures behind. These reward a living world, and Terra Nil is happiest when the player’s footprint finally disappears.
Terra Nil’s cleanup phase gives restoration an ending instead of an endless upgrade screen. Today’s CineLinkr puzzle also deals with confined spaces, although its elevators are much less interested in responsible maintenance.
