Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
WarioWare: Touched! looked at the Nintendo DS microphone and decided breathing should count as a control scheme. Buttons had grown complacent.
Games: Escape Dead Island · Space Engineers · Home · Backspace Bouken
Escape, Space, Home, and Backspace are keyboard keys before they are the opening words of game titles. Backspace Bouken is especially shameless because it also builds play around typing.
This row asks you to stop thinking about genre and look down at the hardware. The solve is sitting under your hands, collecting crumbs and pretending it had nothing to do with this.
Games: Diablo III · Diablo IV · Corpse Keeper · Necrosmith
Diablo III and Diablo IV let Necromancers turn fresh corpses into fuel for skills or summons. Necrosmith goes further and assembles undead fighters from recovered body parts.
Corpse Keeper treats bodies as a roster with decay and maintenance costs. Death is not the end state in these systems. It is inventory, which is efficient and deeply rude.
Games: WarioWare: Touched! · Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story · The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks · The Rub Rabbits!
Spirit Tracks uses the DS microphone for the Spirit Flute. Bowser's Inside Story asks players to blow when giant Bowser needs firepower. WarioWare: Touched! and The Rub Rabbits! use breath for shorter, stranger challenges.
These mechanics belong to a period when Nintendo treated every sensor as a dare. Playing in public required commitment. It also required ignoring the person on the bus who had just watched you blow into a handheld console.
Games: Cats Organized Neatly · Wilmot's Warehouse · Wilmot Works It Out · Inbento
Save Room's spirit survives here through games that make arrangement the whole job. Wilmot's Warehouse asks players to invent a storage system, then remember it while customers wait. Wilmot Works It Out shifts to assembling pieces into pictures.
Inbento packs food into exact patterns. Cats Organized Neatly packs cats into grids, because cats famously respect spatial planning. The aha is that organization is not menu cleanup around the game. Organization is the game.
The microphone row belongs to a specific era of fearless hardware nonsense, and I miss it until I remember shared public spaces. Today’s CineLinkr puzzle also notices marks on a surface, though its clues are punctuation rather than fingerprints.
