PixelLinkr #171: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Drill Dozer shipped on a Game Boy Advance cartridge with built-in rumble. Every gear change could shake the handheld, a small mechanical flourish for a game that considers bedrock a temporary inconvenience.

🟢 Easy: Drilling drives the action

Games: Drill Dozer · Pepper Grinder · Mr. Driller: Drill Land · Mr. Driller 2

Jill's machine in Drill Dozer uses gears to push farther through walls and enemies. Pepper Grinder treats its drill like a high-speed swimming stroke through soil, sending Pepper out of the ground with enough momentum to make landing optional.

The two Mr. Driller games turn excavation into falling-block pressure. Air runs down, colored blocks collapse, and drilling without a plan creates the exact tunnel that buries the plan.

🟡 Medium: Sports games with RPG-style campaigns

Games: Soccer Story · Inazuma Eleven · Mario Tennis · RPGolf Legends

Inazuma Eleven puts football matches inside a Level-5 role-playing structure with recruitable players and special moves. Soccer Story sends the player exploring with a magic ball after soccer has been banned. Subtle lobbying failed.

The Game Boy Color version of Mario Tennis includes character growth and a tennis academy story. RPGolf Legends folds golf into quests and combat. These games want the season, the statistics, and the side mission behind the clubhouse.

🔵 Hard: Alchemy drives progression

Games: Potion Permit · Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream · Alchemist Adventure · Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy

Potion Permit makes diagnosis and brewing part of caring for Moonbury's residents. Ingredients come from the surrounding world, so medical work begins with gathering and occasionally hitting a monster with a tool.

The Atelier games build entire role-playing loops around synthesis. Atelier Ryza 2 uses Linkage Synthesis for item creation, while Atelier Sophie 2 makes recipes and materials central to exploration. Alchemist Adventure turns mixtures into bombs, oils, and puzzle tools.

The shared system is transformation. Raw ingredients are not loot to hoard; they become the answer to the next obstacle. The cauldron is menu, workshop, and tactical accomplice.

🟣 Tricky: Manage trade across the ocean

Games: Port Royale 4 · Anno 1800 · SeaOrama: World of Shipping · Sailing Era

Port Royale 4 models Caribbean trade among colonial powers in the 17th century. Routes, fleets, and commodity prices turn the map into a moving ledger. Pirates are the hostile surcharge.

Anno 1800 places shipping inside a larger industrial city builder. SeaOrama concentrates on vessels and contracts, while Sailing Era adds exploration and role-playing to maritime commerce.

The connection appears once every horizon becomes a route. Ports are nodes, cargo space is opportunity, and distance has a price. The ocean may look romantic, but the spreadsheet has already found it.

The alchemy set made the cleanest mechanical chain: gather, brew, use, repeat. Today's CineLinkr puzzle has golfers and crocodiles, two groups that also care deeply about what lands near the water.
