Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
The Nokia version of Snake arrived on the 6110 in 1998. Its graphics were rectangles, its plot was hunger, and its final boss was the length of its own body. Clean design.
Games: Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector · Donkey Kong Bananza · Doom: The Dark Ages · Mario Kart World
Four 2025 releases cover a lot of ground. Citizen Sleeper 2 takes its dice-driven survival story across the Starward Belt. Doom: The Dark Ages gives the Doom Slayer a shield saw, because somebody at id Software looked at the existing arsenal and found it insufficiently medieval.
Nintendo supplied the other pair. Donkey Kong Bananza brought Donkey Kong to a new 3D platforming adventure, while Mario Kart World made its racing world broader and less interested in containing drivers to one polite circuit.
Games: Shop Titans · Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! · Dealer's Life 2 · King of Retail
Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! makes sentient potatoes forge equipment for adventurers. The punctuation tells you the shop has already lost control of its brand voice.
Dealer's Life 2 focuses on appraisal and haggling in a pawn shop. King of Retail expands the headache to staffing and store layout, while Shop Titans mixes crafting with customer sales. The monster in this category is margin.
Games: Zoo Tycoon · Zoo Tycoon 2 · Zoo Empire · Wildlife Park
The original Zoo Tycoon arrived on Windows in 2001 and made exhibit walls, guest paths, and animal happiness equally urgent. Zoo Tycoon 2 added a ground-level guest mode, letting players inspect the park they had previously judged from above.
Zoo Empire and Wildlife Park work the same management nerves through habitat design and visitor needs. A zoo that looks lovely can still be one bad fence, one empty food station, or one furious predator away from a refund queue.
The category asks for more than games containing animals. All four make the institution itself the system. Players balance welfare, money, space, and the troubling confidence of guests who stand directly beside the tiger enclosure.
Games: Snakebird · Snakebird Primer · Snake Rattle 'n' Roll · Snake
Snakebird and Snakebird Primer turn length into geometry. Eating fruit extends the creature, which is useful until the extra body blocks the route and the puzzle reveals that lunch was a zoning error.
Rare's Snake Rattle 'n' Roll sends two snakes through isometric platforming stages. Nokia's Snake removes the platforms and most other luxuries, leaving movement, food, growth, and collision.
Literalism wins this round. The genres and eras disagree, but the controlled body is long, legless, and increasingly hard to park. Sometimes tricky means the answer was hissing in plain sight.
The snake set is the one I would keep on the table, preferably at a safe distance. Today's CineLinkr puzzle has killer vehicles and sea monsters, so nowhere else is especially safe either.
