PixelLinkr #165: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Lips shipped with wireless motion-sensitive microphones, so the Xbox 360 could judge both your pitch and your decision to wave the hardware around. Living-room dignity was not a supported platform.

🟢 Easy: Vocal performances are scored

Games: Lips · Def Jam Rapstar · Boogie · We Sing

All four listen while the player performs. Def Jam Rapstar focuses on rap, Boogie mixes vocals with dancing, and We Sing brings four microphones into the same room, which sounds less like a feature than a housing dispute.

The scoring turns a song into a game chart. Pitch, rhythm, and timing become numbers before the final note has finished apologizing.

🟡 Medium: Switch combat styles during a fight

Games: Like a Dragon: Ishin! · Devil May Cry 4 · Absolver · Lost Judgment

Ishin! moves between sword, gun, brawling, and wild dancing styles. Lost Judgment also treats stance choice as part of Yagami's tool kit, including a style built around deflecting armed enemies.

Devil May Cry 4 lets Dante switch styles in real time. Absolver makes stance and move construction the whole fighting language. Picking the next punch is also picking the grammar.

🔵 Hard: Companions can leave over player choices

Games: GreedFall · Wasteland 3 · Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire · Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn

These companions do not sign lifetime contracts. Push a faction decision too far or violate a personal loyalty and a party member can walk away permanently.

Deadfire tracks how companions feel about the player and about each other. A ship full of strong opinions does not become calmer merely because everybody has a quest marker.

The group rewards players who remember consequences outside combat. Party composition is not just stats. It is a collection of people quietly deciding whether they can stand you.

🟣 Tricky: Switch polarity to attack or survive

Games: Outland · Silhouette Mirage · Kyotokei · eXceed 2nd: Vampire REX

Opposing colors or attributes decide which attacks hurt. Switch at the right moment and danger becomes harmless; switch late and the lesson arrives at full speed.

Treasure released Silhouette Mirage years before Ikaruga made polarity switching famous. Its Silhouette and Mirage forms change how the heroine damages different enemies.

The click comes from watching offense and defense trade places. Color is not decoration here. It is a tiny rules manual flashing across every projectile.

The companion group has the sharpest consequence: your friends can simply leave. CineLinkr has its own exits today, with four titles that begin by saying hello or goodbye.
