PixelLinkr #161: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Boktai 2 put a solar sensor in its Game Boy Advance cartridge. Hideo Kojima looked at handheld gaming and decided the sun should become an accessory that cannot be misplaced under the sofa.

🟢 Easy: Bartending is the player's main job

Games: VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action · Bartender Hustle · Best Served Cold · Bartender VR Simulator

VA-11 Hall-A ties dialogue to the drinks Jill serves. The customer's order matters, but so does what the player chooses to pour when the request is vague or the truth needs loosening.

Best Served Cold turns the bartender into a detective across five cases. Bartender Hustle and Bartender VR Simulator focus harder on technique. Spilling a virtual cocktail remains less embarrassing than doing it while somebody watches in silence.

🟡 Medium: Can be completed without killing anyone

Games: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided · Styx: Master of Shadows · Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist · Dishonored: Death of the Outsider

Mankind Divided has a Pacifist achievement that includes bosses. Blacklist rewards a Ghost approach, and Styx gives mercy insignias for missions cleared without bodies.

Death of the Outsider even gives its title target a nonlethal resolution. These games hand over lethal tools, then quietly track whether the player can resist using them. The restraint is the mechanic.

🔵 Hard: The real-world clock changes game events

Games: Pokémon Gold Version · Pokémon HeartGold Version · Tomodachi Life · Boktai 2: Solar Boy Django

Pokémon Gold added a real-time clock to control day, night, weekday events, and encounters. HeartGold rebuilt the idea on Nintendo DS, where changing the system clock could trigger a 24-hour penalty.

Tomodachi Life lets islanders sleep and follow routines on the 3DS schedule. Boktai 2 combines its clock with measured sunlight. The connection clicks when time stops being background flavor and becomes a resource the player cannot pause.

🟣 Tricky: Originally released for WonderSwan

Games: Gunpey · Judgement Silversword · Riviera: The Promised Land · Dicing Knight.

Gunpey was a 1999 WonderSwan launch game named for Gunpei Yokoi. Riviera began on WonderSwan Color before its better-known Game Boy Advance and PSP versions.

Judgement Silversword grew from WonderWitch homebrew, while Dicing Knight. also came through that development kit. The aha is historical rather than mechanical: four games that later traveled elsewhere share Bandai's compact handheld as their first home.

The solar cartridge is hard to beat as physical comedy. On CineLinkr, rotoscoping leaves live movement under every drawn frame.
