Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
Flappy Bird needed one tap, a few pipes, and no mercy. Dong Nguyen removed it from mobile stores in 2014 after its sudden success became overwhelming. Plenty of games use more buttons and leave a smaller crater.
Games: Saturday Morning RPG · Sunday Gold · Monday Night Combat · Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle
Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Friday. The week is incomplete, but the title pattern is not. Each game leads with a weekday before heading somewhere completely different.
Saturday Morning RPG chases cartoon nostalgia. Sunday Gold is a bleak tactical adventure. Monday Night Combat turns sport into televised gunfire. Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle lets Jason solve murder as a sliding puzzle. Tuesday has wisely stayed home.
Games: Plague Inc: Evolved · Pandemic: The Board Game · Pathogen · Infectonator 3: Apocalypse
Plague Inc. and Infectonator 3 put the player on the spreading side. Mutation, transmission, and geography become offensive tools. Pandemic reverses the goal and asks a team to contain outbreaks before the map collapses.
Pathogen abstracts infection into territorial control on a cellular board. Across the group, the outbreak is not background fiction. It is the shape of the strategy, and every move changes what can spread next.
Games: Game Dev Story · City Game Studio · Hollywood Animal · Empire TV Tycoon
Game Dev Story began on Windows in 1997 before finding a much larger mobile audience. It condenses staffing, development, reviews, and sales into a cheerful cycle that can make one disastrous sequel feel like an accounting problem.
City Game Studio expands the game-business machinery. Hollywood Animal begins in 1929 and adds actors, censorship, studio politics, and distribution. Empire TV Tycoon schedules programming while producing shows and films for a fickle audience.
The group works because creative decisions arrive attached to budgets. A strange project might be brilliant, but payroll remains unconvinced. The player is not the artist in the room. The player is the person asking whether the artist can finish by Thursday.
Games: Canabalt · Jetpack Joyride · Flappy Bird · Tiny Wings
Each game automates forward movement and gives the player one input. Tap to jump, thrust, flap, or dive. That is the entire control scheme, which leaves nowhere to hide.
Canabalt helped define the endless runner with a single button and grey rooftops. Jetpack Joyride turns pressing and releasing into altitude control. Tiny Wings uses touch to dive into hills and build momentum. Flappy Bird uses tapping to produce regret.
Stop thinking about genre and count what the hand does. One finger is enough to play all four, and apparently enough to ruin an afternoon.
The one-input group is elegant in the manner of a mousetrap: simple, clear, and rude. Today's CineLinkr puzzle offers a calmer route through grief, with four films built around carrying ashes to a final destination.
