PixelLinkr #154: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Helldivers 2 discards the rounds left in a magazine when the player reloads. This is a small rule with enormous comic power. Every nervous early reload becomes a donation to the planet.

🟢 Easy: Fishing is the main activity

Games: Reel Fishing · Fishing Resort · Fishing Sim World: Pro Tour · Fishing: Barents Sea

Reel Fishing arrived on PlayStation in 1996 with an unusually sober approach to rods, bait, and landing fish. Fishing Resort expands the idea into a Wii vacation with more than 200 species.

The two simulations scale the job differently. Fishing Sim World follows competitive angling. Fishing: Barents Sea puts the player on commercial vessels in northern waters. One wants a trophy catch. The other has fuel costs.

🟡 Medium: Rebuilding a town drives progression

Games: Dark Cloud · Dragon Quest Builders 2 · Littlewood · Grow: Song of the Evertree

Dark Cloud stores destroyed buildings and villagers as pieces that the player places back into town. Reconstruction is part puzzle, part civic planning, and part argument about where somebody's house should face.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 makes construction the heroic skill. Littlewood begins after the world-saving battle and asks what happens next. Grow restores districts and communities by tending new worlds. The reward is not merely a larger base. It is seeing life return to the map.

🔵 Hard: World Video Game Hall of Fame inductees

Games: Asteroids · SimCity · Centipede · Defender

The Strong National Museum of Play inducted Centipede in 2020. Asteroids and SimCity joined in 2024, followed by Defender in 2025. The dates are recent, but the games earned their cases through decades of influence.

The set covers arcade shooting, city building, trackball precision, and frantic civilian rescue. It is not a genre group. It is an institutional judgment about games whose designs escaped their original hardware and stayed legible.

There is also something pleasing about SimCity sharing a row with three games devoted to destroying things. One title builds zoning policy. The others have notes.

🟣 Tricky: Reloading tracks every magazine's remaining rounds

Games: Receiver 2 · Helldivers 2 · Insurgency · Ready or Not

Most shooters pour spare ammunition into an invisible common bucket. These four remember the magazines. Reload carelessly and the missing rounds remain in a half-used magazine or disappear with it.

Receiver 2 models individual firearm operations with almost fussy detail. Insurgency and Ready or Not make ammunition discipline part of tactical survival. Helldivers 2 weaponizes the rule for cooperative panic.

The connection clicks during the first bad reload. The animation looks familiar, but the number does not recover. Habit has become waste, and the game has kept the receipt.

The town-restoration group offers the day's nicest payoff: an empty place slowly becomes inhabited. Today's CineLinkr puzzle visits buildings from the other direction, with cinemas to run and unwanted residents hiding in the walls.
