PixelLinkr #130: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger lets its narrator revise a gunfight while you are standing inside it. Enemies disappear, routes change, and Silas continues talking as if memory were a level editor.

🟢 Easy: Build an off-world settlement

Games: Aven Colony · Planetbase · Industries of Titan · Offworld Trading Company

Planetbase asks for oxygen, food, power, and enough spare parts to prevent a distant planet from becoming an expensive cemetery. The first dome feels hopeful. The first broken airlock changes the mood.

Aven Colony adds alien weather and disease. Industries of Titan turns Saturn's moon into a corporate city. Offworld Trading Company makes the Martian base an economic weapon. Space colonization quickly rediscovers rent.

🟡 Medium: The protagonist's perception cannot be trusted

Games: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger · Get Even · Observer · Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Silas tells contradictory Western stories in Gunslinger, and the world adjusts around his corrections. Get Even hides identity inside nested memory simulations.

The mind-hacks of Observer dissolve reliable surroundings. Hellblade uses voices, visual patterns, and shifting space to place the player inside Senua's experience. These games do not promise objective footage. They promise a mind under pressure.

🔵 Hard: Ricochets and pegboards decide the attack

Games: Peglin · Roundguard · Peggle · Beast Breaker

Peglin points an orb at a field of pegs, then converts the resulting chaos into damage. It is a roguelike in which geometry gets the final vote.

Roundguard launches the hero through monsters and bumpers. Beast Breaker uses pinball-like rebounds across enormous creatures. Peggle removes the swords but keeps the same pleasure: one shot, many collisions, an unreasonable attachment to a lucky bounce.

🟣 Tricky: Nintendo games developed by Western studios

Games: Metroid Prime Remastered · Luigi's Mansion 2 HD · Mario Strikers: Battle League · Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Retro Studios in Austin led both Metroid Prime Remastered and Tropical Freeze. Next Level Games in Vancouver made Battle League. Australia's Tantalus handled Luigi's Mansion 2 HD.

The box says Nintendo, but the development map points across North America and Australia. That is the aha: familiar Japanese series, external Western production teams, and no shared genre to give the category away.

The pegboard group had the best noise. A perfect bank shot can make strategic planning feel briefly optional.

Today's CineLinkr puzzle also studies unreliable watching, with suspicious neighbors replacing mind-hacks.
