🟢 Easy: Paint transforms the playable terrain

Games: Splatoon · Splatoon 2 · Splatoon 3 · Tag: The Power of Paint

Splatoon made floor coverage into a scoreboard and a movement system at once. Ink claims territory, refills ammunition, and lets squid kids swim through the battlefield. A clean floor is tactical failure.

Its sequels keep that grammar and expand the weapon cabinet. Tag uses colors to alter surface physics instead: one launches, another speeds, another sticks. The paint is not decoration. It is level design supplied by the player.

🟡 Medium: Historical figures enter a fictional conflict

Games: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood · Sid Meier's Civilization VI · Fate/Samurai Remnant · Nioh 2

Brotherhood puts Ezio beside Leonardo da Vinci and Machiavelli while turning Cesare Borgia into its chief enemy. The history is real enough to recognize, then secret orders arrive and start climbing monuments.

Civilization VI lets rulers who never met settle grudges across millennia. Fate/Samurai Remnant summons famous warriors into a magical ritual, while Nioh 2 adds yokai to Japan's unification wars. The textbook has been asked to accept several patches.

🔵 Hard: Music by Grant Kirkhope

Games: Perfect Dark · Banjo-Tooie · Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning · Grabbed by the Ghoulies

Grant Kirkhope gave Banjo-Tooie its elastic cartoon sound and helped score Perfect Dark with Graeme Norgate and David Clynick. Rare in that era could move from kazoo jokes to alien espionage without changing buildings.

He later scored the broad fantasy of Kingdoms of Amalur and returned to haunted slapstick for Grabbed by the Ghoulies. The category crosses genres, but the music keeps a taste for strong melody and mischief.

🟣 Tricky: Titles built from body parts

Games: ARMS · Headlander · Backbone · Iron Lung

ARMS barely hides the trick. HEAD sits at the front of Headlander, BACKBONE takes the full title, and LUNG closes Iron Lung.

The joke gets better because the games take the anatomy seriously. Headlander stars a detached head. ARMS stretches limbs across arenas. Iron Lung names a submarine with no windows and very little mercy. Spot the body part, then try not to imagine the medical chart.

Grant Kirkhope supplied the widest tonal jump. Few résumés place a bear with a backpack beside Joanna Dark so comfortably.

Today's CineLinkr puzzle also sends trouble through the environment, but its lighthouses are harder to repaint.
