Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
Passage lasts five minutes. Jason Rohrer fits courtship, aging, loss, and death into a strip of pixels so narrow that moving right begins to feel like a personal decision.
Games: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion · The Escapists 2 · The Suffering · The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
Oblivion starts in a cell across from a dark elf who immediately insults you. Then the emperor uses a secret passage in your wall. Tamriel's prison planning has several concerns.
The Escapists 2 turns escape into the complete job. The Suffering begins on death row as the prison collapses into horror, while Riddick wakes captured aboard the Dark Athena. None of these games wastes time pretending the front door is available.
Games: Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy · Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II · Galerians · Scarlet Nexus
Psi-Ops arrived in 2004 with a physics playground disguised as a military shooter. Throwing a guard into another guard was often the correct tactical answer and always the funnier one.
Force Grip gives Starkiller similar freedom. Galerians makes psychic power dangerous to its user, while Scarlet Nexus turns nearby scenery into a rapid combat resource. If a room contains a vending machine, it contains ammunition.
Games: ECHO · The Forest · Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain · SiN Episodes: Emergence
The copies in ECHO learn actions performed during the previous cycle. Use a gun, and they gain guns. Stop using an ability, and a later reboot can take it away. The safest strategy is temporary self-restraint.
Metal Gear Solid V issues helmets after repeated headshots. Cannibals in The Forest react to aggression, while SiN Episodes adjusts enemy pressure through its Personal Challenge System. The difficulty setting has been replaced by consequences for developing habits.
Games: Assassin's Creed II · Passage · Fable: The Lost Chapters · Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life
Ezio's story crosses decades, and his face changes with them. The hero in Fable ages alongside progression, while Another Wonderful Life carries its farmer through chapters of adulthood.
Passage compresses the same idea until aging becomes impossible to ignore. The character crosses the screen, grays, slows, and dies while the score keeps moving. A five-minute game has no room for denial.
ECHO is the group that makes me most nervous. My usual tactics do not need witnesses.
Across at CineLinkr, real people stepped back inside versions of their own lives, another way performance can remember you.
