PixelLinkr #95: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Freedom Fighters is not subtle about the fantasy. Invaders take New York, you start a resistance, and every street corner becomes a chance to do something loud and unwise. Subtlety had other plans that day.

🟢 Easy: Rebellion against occupying regimes

Games: Freedom Fighters · Homefront · Beyond Good & Evil · Mirror's Edge Catalyst

Freedom Fighters and Homefront are the blunt instruments here: occupation, resistance, guns, ruined streets. Beyond Good & Evil is more charming but still built around exposing an oppressive power. Mirror's Edge Catalyst turns corporate control into a city-sized system you run across, kick through, and distrust on principle.

For the July 3 slot, this row gives the holiday theme some teeth. It is not fireworks yet. It is the part before fireworks, when somebody has to decide the regime needs a problem.

🟡 Medium: American Revolution-era strategy and action

Games: Assassin's Creed III: Liberation · Empire: Total War · Liberty or Death · Holdfast: Nations At War

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation puts Aveline de Grandpré into the 18th-century colonial world. Empire: Total War lets the wider century turn into campaign maps and artillery smoke. Liberty or Death is the most literal title in the row, a Koei strategy game about the American Revolution.

Holdfast: Nations At War stretches into multiplayer musket chaos from the era's warfare traditions. The group is about the period and its battles, not one exact mechanic. Powder, flags, factions, and a lot of reloading.

🔵 Hard: Open-world games in real U.S. cities

Games: Marvel's Spider-Man · inFamous: Second Son · Tom Clancy's The Division 2 · Watch Dogs 2

Marvel's Spider-Man gives you New York as a playground with crimes every three blocks, which is rude but efficient. inFamous: Second Son takes Seattle and paints it with superpowers. The Division 2 makes Washington, D.C. look like every committee meeting finally went feral. Watch Dogs 2 turns the Bay Area into a hackable toy box.

The hard part is separating this from generic open world design. The shared connection is the real U.S. city anchor: New York, Seattle, Washington, and San Francisco. Not fantasy kingdoms. Not vibes. Actual map names with better traversal.

🟣 Tricky: Titles start with U.S. state names

Games: California Games · Michigan: Report from Hell · Delaware St. John Volume 1: The Curse of Midnight Manor · Oregon Trail II

California, Michigan, Delaware, Oregon. The state names are sitting at the front of the titles, waving like they know July is their month. The games themselves are chaos as a set: sports compilation, survival horror, point-and-click mystery, educational wagon trauma.

That mismatch is the trick. If you try to solve by genre, the row laughs at you. If you read the first word and trust the map, it clicks.

Today's CineLinkr puzzle matched the holiday mood with baseball, revolution, Washington politics, and a Congress that apparently needed musical numbers.
